Virginia Grey Wise

Lebanon, VA – The Moccasin Community sadly lost a pillar on June 14, 2023 when Mrs. Virginia Grey Wise, favorably known as Gin Gin passed away in the Russell County Hospital.

She was born March 1, 1935 in Spring City, Virginia. She married James Edward Wise, Sr., January 19, 1953. Virginia worked many years as an Election Officer of Russell County, was a founding member of the Oak Grove Senior Citizens, Auxiliary Copper Creek Moccasin Volunteer Fire Department. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Free Hill Baptist Church in Nickelsville, VA.

She spent her life working on the family farm, raising tobacco, field crops and cattle. She enjoyed gardening and canning. She was known for her home cooking and quilting was her passion.

Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Ellis Jessee and Lucy Ellen Warner Jessee; husband: James Edward Wise, Sr.; brothers: Ellis June Jessee, Gene Jessee, Cecil Jessee, Larry Jessee, Richard Jessee, Burns Jessee, and infant brother Kenneth Jessee; sisters: Joyce Collins and Ruth Ellen Saidak.

Survivors include her son: James E. Wise, Jr. (Jader) and wife Darlene of Lebanon, VA; granddaughters: Katie Halsey, Kelsey McCoy and husband John Michael; great-grandson: Miles James McCoy; sisters: Sandy Midkiff of Jonesboro, Arkansas and Ann Osborne of Lenoir, North Carolina.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Combs-Hess Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Larry Beavers and Rev. Ted Rasnake officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 Friday, June 16, 2023.  

Serving as pallbearers will be Buster Dean, David Phillips, Greg Meade, Gary Easterly, Bob Easterly, Burnie Jessee, Tony Davis, Donald (Slick) Osborne.

Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Hartsock, Don Osborne, Sr., Jerry (Punk) Booth, Roger Jessee, Wayne Easterly, Sonny Austin, Bob Wise and Larry Dean.
