Bennie Bryan Johnson, Jr.

Lebanon, VA – Bennie Bryan Johnson, Jr., age 64, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 29, 2023. He retired from Alpha Natural Resources as a mine superintendent and worked thirty-eight years as a coal miner, served on mine rescue, was a member of UMWA, and served on the Mine Safety Board. He was an avid Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider and enjoyed spending time at his second home Riverside Campground. He enjoyed whittling wood while telling everybody what to do and enjoyed every day as if was his last. He was an active member of Free Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Bennie Bryan Johnson, Sr. and Ella Bradley Johnson; and his father-in-law: Kenneth Garrett.

Survivors include his wife of forty-four years: Terri Garrett Johnson; daughter: Courtney Deskins; son: Jeremiah Johnson and wife Sarah; special son-in-law: David Deskins; mother-in-law: Jean Garrett; brothers: Michael Johnson and wife Cheryl, Joseph Johnson and wife Sandy; grandchildren: Colten Bryan Johnson, Aiden James Deskins, Bowen Garrett Deskins, Gunner Samuel Johnson; sister-in-law: Kim Owen; along with several nieces, nephews and many other family members and friends.

A special thank you to Dr. Charles Bolick, all the nurses at Ballad Health Cancer Center of Bristol and to Meals of Love Ministry.

Funeral services will be provided Thursday, June 1, 2023. at 7:00 p.m. at Combs-Hess Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Chris Musick and Rev. Darrell Fletcher officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2023 at Free Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.  All those wishing to accompany the family in the procession should meet at Combs-Hess Funeral Service at 10:15 a.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dave Osborne, Rick Wampler, Mark Cox, Shawn Greer, John Hall, David Deskins, Gavin Owen, and Daniel Brommer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Free Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 195, Nickelsville, VA 24270.
